Singing in Germany: What is Yodeling?
Most experts agree nowadays that yodeling was used in the Central Alps by herders calling their stock or to communicate between Alpine villages. Yodeling means singing with a rapid, dramatic change in pitch. The English word yodel is derived from the German word jodeln, meaning "to utter the syllable jo“. Yodeler is someone who yodels, and you can call this sound itself a yodel as well. So if you ever get lost in the Adirondacks, you know what to do!
You can teach yourself to yodel, like Taylor Ware did. She was only seven years old when she decided to teach herself over the summer (what a great pastime!), and then she went to America's Got Talent! Watch her amazing performance here:
Do you think you could learn to yodel? If you went to America's Got Talent, what talent of yours would you like to show?
